There are several different types of unvented cylinder, they are often called a ‘Megaflo’.
Our customers even though they are not in the trade, call unvented cylinders a Megaflo, why is that?
All unvented cylinders legally have to have an expansion vessel fitted, why, imagine you had a 100 litre capacity cylinder, you fill it up with 100 litres of cold water at approx 10 degrees, you switch it on, the Megaflo then heats up the 10 degree cold water up to 60 degrees hot water.
The 100 litres of 10 degree cold water expands as it reaches 60 degrees, and becomes more than 100 litres, where does this additional expanded water go?

There are 2x types of Unvented Cylinder
Direct Type – this means the hot water heater is heated up via 2x 3kw immersion heaters, it is best practice to connect the bottom immersion heater to a 24hr timer, this means the timer will allow the immersion heater to heat up at night using lower rate or cheaper electricity, always as the consumer to check with their electrical provider

The internal expansion vessel which Megaflo Patented and made them unique in the market place has now expired and most unvented brands now offer the same internal expansion vessel which made Megaflo the brand leader.
There are many sizes of unvented cylinder including ‘slim cylinders’ which are typically 450mm wide and much taller.
Top Tip – ‘install a Solar Cylinder….you don’t need Solar Panels’
If you are changing your ‘indirect cylinder’ we recommend changing it to a ‘solar type’ cylinder, don’t worry, you don’t need cylinder.
Direct Unvented Cylinder Electric Only

Bottom immersion
Indirect Unvented Cylinder Electric and Gas
Imm 80 degree water from a gas or electric boiler heats this coil 40-60 degree water returns to boiler to be reheated We do not recommend an electric boiler
Immersion Heater for back up use
Internal Expansion Vessel

Internal Expansion Vessel
Rather than just connect the heat source, in this case a Worcester Bosch Ri Boiler to the coil inside the cylinder, we recommend connecting the boiler to both coils, this heats the cylinder up even faster thus reducing your energy bills
